Chapter 5

I never was a massive fan of waiting. But some things, well, they were worth waiting for.

The girls had crammed themselves in the back for the drive into King’s Canyon, where we hoped to spend the night. After telling me to not, under any circumstances, look in the rearview mirror, they’d gotten to work on ‘Sam’s New Vibe’. Their rustling, cackles, and chatter were a pleasant-if-maddening distraction for the last stretch of the drive. Weary as I was, I was very much looking forward to ‘Surprise Sam’ as we pulled into the car park of King’s Canyon itself – it was wild camping from here on out for us, and given the facilities and the fact we could disguise ourselves as late afternoon hikers, it seemed the logical choice to stop.

“Keep your eyes closed, James!” Mila trilled as the van rumbled to a stop.

“The way this will work, James, is we get out, you keep your eyes closed, and when we say open, you open and gaze upon the perfection we have wrought,” said Jennifer wryly.

I could hardly wait. The van doors slid open, and the girls silently filed out. Cheerleader Sam? Sex-in-the-city Sam? Goth Sam? Samus Aran? The possibilities were endless and I filed them away for future roleplay – hoping we’d have a future.

Dreaming as I was, I didn’t notice anything wrong with the lengthening silence until Samantha’s shrill scream shattered my fantasies.

My eyes snapped open, scanning the growing dark.

A man leant casually against a very expensive car in front of us – though the racing stripes and tacked-on, tacky spoiler spoiled the effect somewhat.

His arms were crossed, and he gazed directly at Sam, licking his lips. She could barely stand, supported as she was by Jen and Mila, a look of horror splashed across her gorgeous face.

Something about the man seemed…off. Cretinous. Dreadful. Moronic. Spineless.

“Very resourceful, Samantha. I too am resourceful. See?” her ex-husband said.
